Ultimately, an author with the most novels adapted into feature films, the number surpassing one hundred and sixty. A writer who penned a fourth of all the books printed in the United Kingdom (school textbooks and the Bible excluded), one whose works and their various editions were sold in more than fifty million copies. And, most notably and most importantly, “one of the most prolific thriller writers of the 20 th century” (as described in The Economist ), who wrote a hundred and seventy novels and almost a thousand short stories. He was also a poet, a director, a playwright with dozens of plays under his belt. Born out of wedlock to two actors in 1875 and growing up with foster parents, Wallace’s life path led him to work as an editor, a reporter, a war correspondent, a newspaper seller, a medical orderly. In many ways, Edgar Wallace was a jack of all trades and a master of some.
